R. D. & Euzelle P. Smith Middle School
location: Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools, North Carolina
Developed by a 50-member committee of educators, parents, students and concerned citizens, R. D. & Euzelle P. Smith Middle School anticipates the needs of students living in the 21st century. The educational theme of the school is global connections, and the facility helps reinforce the theme by providing the students firsthand experience with sustainable building elements that show how energy savings and conservation techniques can make a positive impact on the way we live and how we interact with the world. Nestled between Seawell Elementary School and Chapel Hill High School, the construction of Smith Middle School has completed the creation of a campus complex which includes the education of students from pre-kindergarten through the university level. Through a partnership with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the Schools System, the UNC School of Education has developed an area in one wing of the school that provides facilities for distance learning and educational research that is used by school systems statewide.
