The George M. Holmes Convocation Center presents a major statement at the front door of Appalachian State University. The facility accommodates many University functions, but was also designed to meet the needs of the surrounding region. The building includes a 9,000-seat arena that is the home of the ASU Athletics program, but also hosts concerts and other performances. For the public the building includes approximately 60,000-sf of classrooms, offices and laboratory space for the "Health, Leisure and Exercise Science Department". This department, the second largest on campus, includes courses of study in Sports Medicine, Anatomy and Pedagogy. The imposing mass of the structure is broken down by way of architectural elements which provide human scale.
